Four Tips to Pay Less Rent
Money is tight for many people these days. Renters often have especially tight budgets to work with so saving some money on rent each month could be a huge benefit. Here are four ways you can reduce the amount of rent you pay and put more money back in your pocket each month.
1. Get a roommate. A roommate is the simplest and most effective way to reduce the amount of rent you pay each month. In fact, you can cut the cost of your rent in half by both of you agreeing to split the cost of rent and utilities right down the middle. Just make sure to put your agreements in writing and check with your landlord or property manager to make sure getting a roommate is allowed in the lease that you signed.
2. Do some favors for the landlord. If you are willing to make minor repairs and spruce up your apartment or the home you are renting. Instead of paying a lawn service, some landlords will give you a discount if you mow the lawn and do other things around the home so they don't have to worry about it.
3. Negotiate. If the price of your rent is going to increase when your lease is up, find out what the prices are in the surrounding area. If you can find cheaper places to rent and you have been a trustworthy and reliable tenant, talk to your landlord or property manager about this. They would often rather see you stay and charge you less rent rather than going through the hassle of cleaning the place after you leave and finding new tenants.
4. Look for older apartments. Newly constructed apartments are typically going to charge more rent than the older ones. That's because the newer ones usually have more features and updated amenities. If you want to save money on your rent, consider moving to an older building and sacrificing some of the newer amenities that cost extra.
